A new Rembrandt -- from a 3D printer
Technology has brought us many wonderful things. But can it bring us fine art, as well?
Maybe so.
A team of scientists used data from the body of work of Dutch master artist Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn -- more commonly known simply as Rembrandt -- along with algorithms, facial recognition techniques and a 3D printer to create a piece that simulates the work of Rembrandt. The result is pretty stunning.
The two-year project, entitled "The Next Rembrandt", was a collaboration between Microsoft, financial firm ING, Delft University of Technology and two Dutch art museums.
