On Wednesday night against the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale made history when he recorded his 300th strike out this season.

Sale made history in the eighth inning when he struck out the Orioles’ Ryan Flaherty to end the inning.

Sale is the first American League pitcher to reach 300 strike outs in a season since former Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez in 1999.

The last pitcher in Major League Baseball to reach 300 strike outs was Clayton Kershaw in 2015.

John Smoltz is on the only Braves pitcher to come close to 300 strikeouts in a year, recording 276 K’s in the 1996 season.

On Wednesday, Sale pitched eight innings, allowing four runs with 13 strikeouts.

The Red Sox (88-64) won Wednesday night’s game, 9-0.
