Georgia’s top men’s tennis player, KU Singh of India, quit the team just three days before the No. 2-ranked Bulldogs were scheduled to begin play in the NCAA Tournament.
Singh is ranked No. 4 in the nation with an overall record of 17-9.
Reached by phone Wednesday morning, Singh said he would only respond to questions via email. As of 10:30 a.m. he still had not replied.
Singh told 247sports.com that his departure was due to “personal differences” with the coaching staff and that he was exhausted after taking 28 hours of classes in the semester that just ended.
“My decision to leave was purely a combination of personal differences I had with the coaching staff that built up over the course of the semester and my own personal goals moving forward after college,” Singh told 24/7. “As I am sure you can imagine, this was an extremely difficult decision for me to make, especially at this juncture.”
The third-seeded Bulldogs have with first- and second-round NCAA matches scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
“This is a very close group and today they’re closer than ever,” coach Manny Diaz said in a statement released by UGA. “Our program will continue to stress teamwork, togetherness, and playing with our hearts for each other, as it always has. We are united and are moving forward in a positive manner.”
