Asked on Wednesday for an evaluation of the recently-completed preseason camp, Georgia coach Mark Richt sounded less than thrilled about the performance of the Bulldogs.
“I think as far as the organization of it and what we were trying to accomplish and players for the part trying to do it the way we were asking them to do it, it was pretty darn good in those areas,” Richt said. “But as far as settling a lot of questions like who’s playing where and who’s going to start and what kind of rotation there might be, I don’t know if we know as much coming out of this as I would have liked to at this time.”
Richt said some of that has had to do with injuries and players missing the practice time they needed. He said upperclassmen such as junior defensive back Devin Bowman seemed poised to make a move on the depth chart before getting sidelined by injuries.
“Bowman was really having a pretty good camp, then he pulled a hamstring pretty bad and it stunted his ability to move up the depth chart,” Richt said. “There as a lot of things like that happening.”
Noseguard Chris Mayes and inside linebacker Ramik Wilson missed extended periods of practice due to concussions.
“We’re really close to settling in on it,” Richt said of opening-game lineups. “But I think because there are so many young and inexperienced guys that it’ll be a trial by fire for a lot of these guys. We’ll see how well they handle the pressure of it.”
Asked for standouts among Georgia’s returning lettermen during preseason camp, Richt cited sophomore offensive guard Greg Pyke first among a long list of names.
“And I think (tight end) Quayvon (Hicks) has had a really solid camp,” Richt said. “a guy I think that has really had an outstanding camp is Jordan Jenkins. Leonard Floyd loves football. He just loves to play and he works hard and he does a good job.l I think Corey Moore had a very solid camp. I like what Marshall Morgan has done; I like what both our punters have done. Our snap, hold and kick groups, our operation times have been very good and they’ve done well. We’ve got veteran guys there and they’ve done well.”
