Georgia State defeated Louisiana-Monroe 66-58 on Saturday to tie a school record with its 11th consecutive victory.

The Panthers will attempt to set the new mark against South Alabama at the Sports Arena on Thursday. The record was set two years ago in coach Ron Hunter’s first season.

Georgia State started flat. Hunter said his team was beat up in Thursday’s win at Louisiana-Lafayette. They were also slowed by the Warhawks’ zone.

But the Panthers (14-6, 7-0) turned three consecutive turnovers by the Warhawks into six points to take a 59-55 lead late in the second half.

Georgia State maintained the lead with almost perfect free-throw shooting by Devonta White, Ryan Harrow and Manny Atkins in the final eight minutes. The Panthers hit 17 of 21 free throws in the game.

“Devonta and Ryan were really good,” coach Ron Hunter said. “They controlled the game with their guard play. Devonta made senior plays, and that’s what you’ve got to have.”

Harrow led Georgia State with 18 points. White added 17 and Hunter contributed 13 more. Tylor Ongwae led Monroe with 27 points.

The Panthers also got a boost from Curtis Washington, who grabbed 11 rebounds as Georgia State uncharacteristically outrebounded Louisiana-Monroe by 1.

“Winning on the road is hard, I don’t care what level you are at,” Hunter said.

Georgia State’s defense held the Warhawks to five points in the game’s final 7 minutes, 15 seconds.
