The Georgia Tech men’s team signed guard Tadric Jackson from Tift County High and center Ben Lammers from San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday. Jackson, 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, is ranked the No. 68 prospect in the country by ESPN and the No. 3 player in the state. Jackson, who is a cousin of Tech guard Chris Bolden and a friend of forward Robert Carter, chose Tech over Georgia.
Coach Brian Gregory said that his staff recruited Jackson almost from the time of Gregory’s hire in March 2011, describing him as explosive, good in the open court, unselfish and able to create his own shot.
“He was only a rising sophomore at the time, but he could do so many things as a guard,” Gregory said.
Lammers will fill a void left by the graduation of big men Daniel Miller and Kammeon Holsey. Lammers is 6-10 and 225 pounds and will be able to put on weight. He has good shooting touch and is an active rebounder. Lammers, who picked Tech over Miami, plans to study engineering and met with Tech engineering dean Gary May during his visit.
“If you want to go into engineering and Georgia Tech’s recruiting, my only suggestion is, sign as quickly as possible,” Gregory said.
Tech has two more scholarships available. Gregory said he plans to sign another player in the spring and hold the other.
Georgia State signed two men’s players and hopes to sign a third.
Joining the program are Jordan Session, a 6-9 wing from Eagle’s Landing High, and Jeff Thomas, a 6-5 guard from Norwalk, Ohio) High.
Session averaged nearly 10 points and seven rebounds as a junior. Thomas averaged 14 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game in leading his team to a 24-1 record.
The team will graduate four seniors after this season.
Tech women’s coach MaChelle Joseph plumbed New York and New Jersey for her three signees, forwards Zaire O’Neil and Erin Garner and point guard Imani Tilford. O’Neil and Garner are from New Jersey, Tilford from New York.
ESPN rates O’Neil a five-star prospect and the No. 39 player in the country. She reportedly picked Tech over Ohio State and Georgia, among others. Other recruiting services rank Tech’s class as high as No. 11. Joseph brought in the No. 13 class in 2013 and No. 11 class in 2012, according to ESPN.
The Georgia women signed four players — Jasmine Carter, Haley Clark, Mackenzie Engram and Nasheema Oliver, three from in-state.
Carter is a 5-8 guard at St. Pius. Clark is a 5-9 point guard at Edgewater High in Orlando, Fla. Engram is a 6-2 forward at Hillgrove, and Oliver is a 6-3 forward from Crisp County High.
