Norcross, Ga. cornerback Dameon Williams put most of his focus on Georgia Tech during recruiting.
Now with some perspective, the 3-star Williams admits he would want to see the campuses of Duke, Michigan State and Mississippi State if he had to do the recruiting process over again.
“I was just set on Georgia Tech, so I didn't take my visits," Williams said. “Basically because I was set on Georgia Tech, but I don't regret it.”
Williams went on his official visit to Georgia Tech in January— his only official visit anywhere.
The 5-foot-11, 170 pound cornerback committed to Tech in June and signed his letter-of-intent on National Signing Day.
Williams had offers from Duke, North Carolina, Iowa and Wake Forest, according to 247 Sports.
Williams will enroll at Georgia Tech after graduation from Norcross High School in May.
Here’s the rest of the Q&A with Williams:
What advice would you give to a junior about the recruiting process?
Williams: "To be patient. To take all your visits and be patient about it and you know, just have fun with the recruiting process because it doesn't last forever."
If you could go back and talk to yourself during the recruiting process, what advice would you give?
Williams: "I would want to enjoy the recruiting process more because I didn't necessarily take it for granted, but it was a good process and I'm glad I got to take part in it."
What's the most creative thing a college did to get your attention?
Williams: "All the things I did on my official visit (to Georgia Tech), those were some things that caught my eye... They took me out to some good dinners, the city is really nice though and I had a lot of fun with the players and they showed me a lot of things... It was really welcoming."
Which college coach was the hardest for you to turn down during the recruiting process?
Williams: "(Tech defensive coordinator Ted) Roof... From the first day I met him, he was just truthful, he didn't sugarcoat anything. He told me how it was and every time I met with him, talked to him at Georgia Tech, it was just real. A real good relationship."
How was Roof's behavior different than other coaches and colleges you spoke with?
Williams: "Other coaches told me what I wanted to hear, but he didn't... He told me straight up, 'You want to do this at Georgia Tech, you got to do this to get there.' A lot of coaches told me, 'Oh you could definitely do this here. You could definitely do that here.' (Roof) told me how it was and told me it wouldn't be easy. He didn't sugarcoat anything."
What are Georgia Tech's expectations of you as a freshman?
Williams: "To go in there and compete for a position."
What do you want Georgia Tech fans to know about you?
Williams: "I'm a team player and I'm going to do everything I can to help Georgia Tech win."
