Tucker is the new No. 1 team in Class AAAAA with two other DeKalb County teams on its tail in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s high school football rankings.
Tucker took the place of defending AAAAA champion Gainesville, which lost 38-14 last week to Buford, the No. 1 team in AAA.
Following Tucker are No. 2 Stephenson and No. 4 M.L. King. All are in Region 6-AAAAA. The first games among the three won’t take place until next month.
In AAAAAA, North Gwinnett last week became the first No. 1 team to get the top ranking and keep it, if only because the Bulldogs had an off week. That didn’t prevent the highest-ranked team on the schedule, No. 2 Lovejoy, from losing to a former No. 1 team, Colquitt County.
Now, North Gwinnett must play the other former No. 1 team, Norcross, on Friday in what is perhaps the top game in the state this week.
But while AAAAAA continues to be unpredictable at the top, Class A had the most volatile results of the season last week as six Top 10 teams lost.
Wilkinson County and Athens Academy were dropped from the ranking, and Lincoln County, George Walton Academy, Wilcox County and Prince Avenue Christian slid just a little, as they lost to teams that were ranked, or from higher classifications.
Holding firm at the top was Eagle’s Landing Christian, the reigning private-school champion.
Other teams that fell from the rankings are Lowndes (AAAAAA), Bainbridge (AAAAA), Peach County and Thomson (AAA) and Fitzgerald (AA).
Replacing them were Marietta (AAAAAA), Ware County (AAAAA), Hart County and North Oconee (AAA), and Thomasville (AA).
