Francis Tiafoe’s debut in the main draw of the BB&T Atlanta Open didn’t last long.
The 17-year-old American was swept in straight sets 7-6 (3), 6-4 by Australia’s Sam Groth in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday at Atlantic Station.
Tiafoe was given a wildcard entry into the tournament by organizers based on his career-high singles ranking (No. 274) and reputation as one of the next standouts in American tennis.
Groth, making his debut in Atlanta and the No. 62 ranked player in the world, overpowered him with nine aces. He will play Marcos Baghdatis in the second round on Wednesday.
