After undergoing surgery to his left thumb on Monday, freshman tailback Nick Chubb did not practice with the team that evening, according to offensive teammate and wide receiver Kenneth Towns. Monday’s practice was closed to the media.
Chubb fractured his thumb during a practice this past week, but played through the injury with the help of a protective sleeve against South Carolina. Chubb carried the ball four times for a total of 34 yards on Saturday, including a 23-yard run that set up a five-yard touchdown pass from Hutson Mason to Jay Rome to start the fourth quarter.
Lavelle Chubb, Nick’s mother, told The Atlanta-Journal Constitution’s Chip Towers this afternoon her son would likely miss the home game against Troy this weekend and possibly some time afterwards.
Should that be the case, wide receiver Chris Conley isn’t worried about Georgia’s production out of the backfield.
“Another one of our running backs would step up and play,” Conley said. “We’ve got guys who can make plays all over the place other than Nick Chubb. We have Sony Michel, obviously Todd (Gurley), we have Keith Marshall who’s working back in. We also have Brendan Douglas and I am confident in each and every one of those guys’ running ability and their ability to get first downs and score touchdowns.”
Chubb is the only one of Georgia’s tailbacks to score a touchdown this season besides Gurley, who has scored four. Chubb rushed for 104 yards in the Bulldogs’ first two games combined, whereas Michel and Marshall’s performances totaled 61 yards. That being said, players of other positions (tight end/fullback Quayvon Hicks and wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie) have contributed to the Bulldogs’ rushing attack, having also combined for 61 rushing yards so far this season.
