If the NHL playoffs have taught us anything, it's to expect the unexpected. Here are USA TODAY Sports' bold predictions for this year's installment.

Blackhawks will be betrayed by defensive erosion. While winning three Stanley Cups, the Blackhawks were ranked fifth (2010), first (2013) and second (2015) in goals-against average. When they didn't win during that period, their defensive numbers were outside the top 10. They rank 10th this season, and that is misleading because goalie Corey Crawford carried them for extended periods. Defensive struggles will knock them out early. (Kevin Allen)

Jonathan Drouin will be a pivotal player. The shifty forward has scored in both games since his recall. With Steven Stamkos out, the Tampa Bay Lightning could use another player to command the puck and create offense. Drouin will break out in the playoffs, and his performance will cement his status as a long-term member of the Lightning. Justin Williams will score a Game 7 goal. With a nickname like "Mr. Game 7" it seems to be only a matter of time before he strikes in these playoffs, his first run with the Washington Capitals since signing as a free agent last year. Williams, who has won three Stanley Cups and a Conn Smythe in 2014, has seven goals and seven assists in seven Game 7s. And yes, his team is 7-0. (Peter Barzilai)

Kings will sweep the Sharks in Round 1. Familiarity with an opponent can be a good thing, but it can also get you into trouble when you think you can predict their next move. Los Angeles has surprised San Jose before, and in a season when the Sharks have so publicly proclaimed their desperation to win in the playoffs, they may have built themselves up for a major fall. The Sharks went 3-1-1 against Los Angeles during the regular season. (Kristen Shilton)

Petr Mrazek will win back Red Wings' net. Even though Detroit may start with Jimmy Howard in goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning because he has been better lately, Mrazek will get his shot. At 24, he is key to the Red Wings' future. Howard can be a quality goalie, but Mrazek has the potential to be a star. (Kevin Allen)
