LSU coach Les Miles tried to put to rest the idea of the SEC as a top-heavy league by remembering an obstacle on the Tigers’ path to the national championship for 2007.
“We lost to Kentucky on the road that year,” Miles told the Kansas City Star. “Just letting you know, you better be ready to play every week.”
The Wildcats were very good that season under Rich Brooks, finishing 8-5. That triumph over then-top ranked LSU was the highlight of their season.
Miles’ point was that last week’s upsets in the SEC shouldn’t fool anybody into thinking the league is down and that only top-ranked Alabama is national title worthy.
Alabama: Billboard magazine says Crimson Tide could stay No. 1 longer than “Hey Jude,” the Los Angeles Times said. … The Crimson Tide blanked an opponent in the first half for the ninth time in 12 games.
Auburn: Despite the reshuffling in the secondary following Josh Holsey’s season-ending knee injury, coach Gus Malzahn said there hasn’t been any thought of moving Kiehl Frazier, now a receiver, back to safety. “We’ve got a plan and we’ll see what happens moving forward,” he said. “Right now, Kiehl isplaying on offense.” … Holsey’s injury has also affected Johnathan Ford, who had started to get more reps at running back. The true freshman practiced “more defensively” at corner after White moved to safety. “His reps have gone up because of that,” Malzahn said of Ford. … Free “Malzahn Miracle” milkshakes were being served last week at Toomer’s Corner Cafe, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Mississippi State: Baker Swedenburg has been nominated for the Ray Guy Award watch list given annually to the nation’s top punter. The senior was a preseason All-SEC selection and is one of two remaining Bulldogs from the Sylvester Croom era.
Ole Miss: The Rebels (4-3) have played the toughest schedule in the country, according to Jeff Sagarin’s computer rankings. Mississippi lost to No. 1 Alabama, No. 11 Auburn and No. 16 Texas A&M while beating No. 13 LSU, Texas, Vanderbilt and Southeast Missouri.
Texas A&M: Johnny Manziel broke the 8,000 total-yard mark in his career. He needed only 109 coming into Saturday’s game. His goal now is to reach 2,000 rushing so he can become the 17th quarterback in NCAA FBS history for the 2,000 rushing/6,000 passing combo. … A&M’s four fumbles were a season high. Coming into Saturday’s game, the Aggies had lost only two fumbles.
