Kenwyne Jones said a chance to make history is one of the reasons he signed with Atlanta United.

Jones was quoted in the (London) Telegraph as saying, “at this point in my career it would mean a lot to be a part of something new. There’s history being made here; it’s a new era of football for Atlanta and MLS, and I want to be a part of that.”

Atlanta United announced it signed Jones on July 15. Jones announced on Sunday that he is going on loan with Central FC in his native Trinidad and Tobago. He said being closer to home was also one of the things that drew him to Atlanta United.

Jones, 31, spent most of his career in England, playing with Premier League clubs Cardiff City, Stoke City and Sunderland.

Jones said he had other suitors, but said “it’s a good time for me to be going to Atlanta United to help improve the league and set the franchise on a historic journey, play at highest level and always give 100 percent to the club, the fans and the sport.”
