Aquinas football coach James Leonard and his wife, Katie, remain in intensive care with rib fractures and liver and spleen injuries Tuesday after a wreck over the weekend killed a man who had run a red light and was being pursued by police when he crashed into the Leonards’ vehicle, according to WRDW-TV in Augusta.

The Leonards’ preschool son, Hudson, was a passenger in their Toyota 4Runner but suffered only minor injuries, according to the TV station. Aquinas High School posted an update on the family on its Facebook page Tuesday.

“Coach says they are still feeling rough, but are getting better each day, and have even gotten to get out of bed and walk a little and go see each other,” according to the post. “They appreciate all the calls, texts, and visits. Hudson can’t wait for his Mommy and Daddy to get home!”

Leonard is an alumnus of the Augusta Catholic school and became its football coach in 2013, when he led the Fighting Irish to their first state title. His teams are 80-28 over nine seasons. Leonard’s father, Denny, was Aquinas’ coach from 1946 through 1966.

Denny Leonard told the TV station that his son’s car was T-boned about 9 p.m. Saturday. Raymond Allen, 50, of Elberton died at the scene, according to the Richmond County Coroner’s office.
