Jamey DuBose, the head football coach of No. 1-ranked Lowndes of Class 7A, is hospitalized with COVID-19 , the coach and his wife, Tracey, announced late Friday.

''My symptoms have already improved. I am confident that I will continue to improve and be released soon,'' the coach said in a statement on Facebook.

The news came two days after the football team shut down practices for two weeks because of COVID-19 infection in the program. Lowndes' next scheduled game is Oct. 30 against Tift County.

DuBose is at least the fourth South Georgia head coach, and second from four-school Region 1, to be hospitalized since the season began Sept. 2. Ashley Anders of region rival Tift County, Casey Soliday of Irwin County and Jeff Kaiser of Statesboro, all treated and released last month, are the others.. They have rejoined their teams.

DuBose is in his first season at Lowndes. He won state championships in Alabama at Prattville in 2008 and 2011 and at Central of Phenix City in 2018.
