The discussion should no longer be whether Warner Robins is the best team in Class 5A. It question should now be whether the Demons are the No. 1 in the state – regardless of classification.

Warner Robins entered that discussion after Friday’s impressive 56-30 win over Lee County, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 6A. The victory improved Warner Robins’ record to 5-0 and means it has scored at least 48 points in each game, an average of 50.4 points.

The wild game was decided in the third quarter when Warner Robins scored four touchdows within a seven-minute period to put the game away. Malcolm Brown rushed 18 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Christon Lane threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns, with Daveon Walker hauling in nine catches for 236 yards and two scores.

It was the eighth straight win on the field for Warner Robins against ranked opponents.

The other two ranked teams from Region 1 split their games. No. 2 Ware County fell to Class 3A No. 4 Benedictine 49-42 and No. 5 Coffee knocked off Class 7A Camden County 10-7.

Ware County (4-1) played without key players because of injuries and could not slow Benedictine quarterback Holden Geriner, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for three touchdowns. Ware quarterback Thomas Castellanos ran for two touchdowns and threw for two others and Cartevious Norton ran for two scores.

Coffee (6-0) got a 50-yard field goal from David Vaughn and took the lead early in the fourth quarter when Justin Swords connected with Matthew Adams for a 55-yard touchdown.

Both teams are off this week – unless Ware can find a replacement for the game it lost an opponent’s COVID -- and open the region schedule Oct. 8 in Douglas.

In Region 7, No. 3 Cartersville and No. 9 Blessed Trinity both had the week off, but No. 7 Calhoun had time to hammer Class 3A No. 6 Cedartown 31-7 on Thursday. Calhoun quarterback Christian Lewis threw a pair of touchdown passes, a 12-yarder to Dustin Kerns and a 95-yard bomb to Quin Smith and Smith threw for a 36-yard option pass to Cole Speer, as the Yellow Jackets piled up 431 yards, 299 through the air. Sophomore Caden Williams added a 57-yard run to complete the scoring.

In Region 3, No. 6 Woodward Academy’s Damari Alston ran for three touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass in the War Eagles’ 29-14 win over Banneker. ... No. 4 Creekside improved to 4-1 by blanking Tri-Cities 55-0 for its second straight shutout.

In Region 5, both ranked teams rolled to victory in their league openers. No. 8 St. Pius blanked Northview 47-0 and No. 10 Decatur whipped previously unbeaten Stone Mountain 63-0.

In Region 2, Whitewater improved to 4-1 win a decisive 40-6 win over previously unbeaten Northside Columbus.

In Region 6, reigning region champion New Manchester edged rival Lithia Springs 9-6 in the league opener. Yasim Muhammad caught a 12-yard touchdown pass to put the Jaguars (2-3) on the board. Lithia Springs (1-4) answered with a touchdown pass, but missed the extra point. New Manchester earned a safety with six minutes left in the third quarter.

In Region 8, Clarke Central was able to outlast Jackson County 34-30 to square its record at 2-2 and hold onto first place. … The league’s biggest surprise was Apalachee picking up its first win of the season with a 22-21 upset over Eastside. Colby Sikes ran for a 2-yard touchdown with 44 seconds left and then added a two-point conversion run to give the Wildcats the win.
