Week 6 will be the first time this season that the majority of the Class 4A games will be region matchups. There are 23 games taking place in the classification this weekend following the cancellation of undefeated LaGrange and Shaw that was called off due to Covid issues within the Shaw program. As a result, LaGrange and Shaw will join the 14 other teams in the classification that will be off this week on their byes.
In Region 1, Cairo will host Florida’s Merritt Island and Thomas County Central will visit defending Class 2A state champion Callaway. The Cavaliers are 4-0 and have previously defeated two other Class 4A programs in Troup (28-7) and Hardaway (23-14) this season.
Region 2 will have two region games on Thursday (Columbus at Troup and Hardaway at Spencer) and one on Friday with Jordan at Kendrick. The previously-mentioned LaGrange vs. Shaw game was called off and Carver-Columbus is off on its bye. Troup joins Carver-Columbus and LaGrange as the only other Region 2 team that is yet to drop a region game.
The four-team Savannah-based Region 3 will continue its non-region schedule with Benedictine visiting Class 5A powerhouse and undefeated Ware County. Islands hosts Beach, New Hampstead visits Groves and Jenkins will host Savannah on Saturday.
The region action is kicking off in Region 4 for the first time this season with a trio of showdowns. Baldwin will visit Westside-Macon, Perry will visit Rutland on Thursday and West Laurens will visit Spalding.
In Region 5, Mt. Zion Jonesboro will visit Class 5A Jonesboro and North Clayton will visit Riverdale in region play as the rest of the region is off on their byes. Region 6 will have three region matchups and Marist will host Class 7A Harrison. The three region games are Arabia Mountain at undefeated Stephenson, Miller Grove at Druid Hills and Hapeville Charter at Mays.
In Region 7, No. 6 ranked Cedartown visits Class 5A No. 7 Calhoun, Central-Carroll hosts Class 2A Heard County and Southeast Whitfield hosts Class A Public’s Gordon Lee.
The biggest Class 4A matchup will take place in Region 8 this week with No. 1 Jefferson hosting No. 7 Flowery Branch in their region opener. Two more outstanding region battles are also on the slate with East Hall at Cedar Shoals and Madison County at North Oconee.
