ajc.com

Region standings take center stage as the regular season heads into the final two weekends. Across each of the classes’ eight regions, here’s a look at races and what’s on the horizon before the first round of the playoffs Nov. 12-13.

Region 1

Team Reg. Overall

No. 2 Appling County -- 2-0, 8-0

No. 5 Pierce County -- 2-0, 6-2

Long County -- 1-2, 4-5

Brantley County -- 1-2, 3-5

Tattnall County -- 0-2, 5-3

Notes: The region likely will come down to Pierce at Appling on Nov. 5. Until then, Appling travels to Brantley and Pierce hosts Tattnall County Friday.

Region 2

Team Reg. Overall

Crisp County -- 5-0, 5-3

Peach County -- 4-1, 4-3

Mary Persons -- 3-2, 5-3

Jackson -- 3-2, 4-4

Upson-Lee -- 2-3, 4-4

Pike County -- 2-3, 3-5

Central-Macon -- 1-4, 1-7

Sumter County -- 0-5, 0-7

Notes: Crisp’s 27-14 victory against Peach County on Oct. 8 all but decided the region. Now the Cougars need to cruise past Central-Macon Friday and Pike County on Nov. 5 – both home games -- to take the title.

Region 3

Team Reg. Overall

Liberty County -- 4-1, 4-3

SE Bulloch -- 3-1, 7-1

Windsor Forest -- 3-1, 4-3

Johnson-Sav. -- 1-2, 2-5

Beach -- 1-2, 1-6

Savannah -- 1-3, 3-5

Groves -- 0-3, 0-7

Notes: Liberty County is 4-1 in the region but has a loss to Windsor Forest (12-6 on Oct. 8). The region likely will go to a tie-breaker scenario unless Windsor Forest loses to Southeast Bulloch or Savannah in the next two games.

Region 4

Team Reg. Overall

No. 6 Thomson -- 5-0, 8-0

Burke County -- 3-1, 5-2

Hephzibah -- 3-1, 5-3

Harlem -- 2-2, 4-4

Morgan County -- 2-2, 3-5

Richmond Aca. -- 0-4, 1-7

Cross Creek -- 0-5, 1-8

Notes: Thomson has all but locked up the region title and will face Hephzibah on Nov. 5. The Bulldogs beat Burke County 27-14 on Oct. 15. Burke and Hepzibah are tied at 3-1 behind Thomson.

Region 5

Team Reg. Overall

No. 1 Cedar Grove -- 5-0, 6-2

No. 8 Sandy Creek -- 4-1, 7-1

No. 7 Carver-Atl. -- 4-1, 5-2

GAC -- 3-2, 3-5

Salem -- 2-3, 4-4

Westminster -- 1-4, 3-5

Douglass -- 1-4, 1-7

Redan -- 0-5, 2-6

Notes: Sandy Creek’s loss to Carver-Atlanta had a large impact on the league standings. Now, Carver and Sandy Creek are tied at 4-1 in the league, and Carver has the head-to-head edge against the Patriots. Top-ranked Cedar Grove leads the standings and will face Sandy Creek on Nov. 5. Cedar Grove beat Carver on Sept. 24 (17-0). Carver beat Sandy Creek last week, and if Sandy Creek beats Cedar Grove it would make for a very interesting ending to the 5-3A regular season.

Region 6

Team Reg. Overall

Ringgold -- 6-0, 8-0

No. 10 Rockmart -- 6-0, 7-1

Adairsville -- 4-2, 6-2

North Murray -- 4-2, 6-2

Sonoraville -- 3-3, 5-3

LaFayette -- 3-3, 4-4

Coahulla Creek -- 2-5, 4-5

Murray County -- 0-7, 1-8

Lakeview-Fort Ogle. -- 0-6, 0-8

Notes: The league title likely will come down to the Nov. 5 matchup between league front-runners Ringgold and No. 10 Rockmart, each 6-0 in Region 6-3A. Rockmart will travel to LaFayette on Friday and Ringgold will host Sonoraville, which currently sits one game outside the top 4 in the league.

Region 7

Team Reg. Overall

Cherokee Bluff -- 4-0, 8-0

North Hall -- 4-0, 6-2

Dawson County -- 3-1, 4-4

White County -- 2-2, 3-5

Lumpkin Co. -- 1-3, 2-6

Gilmer -- 1-4, 3-5

West Hall -- 0-5, 2-6

East Forsyth -- 0-0, 2-6

Notes: Cherokee Bluff and North Hall, the league’s front-runners at 4-0, will play at North Hall on Friday, and that game could decide the region champion. Cherokee Bluff closes its regular season at White County on Nov. 5. North Hall will travel to Dawson County to close its regular season on Nov. 5, and if North Hall loses to Cherokee Bluff, the Trojans possibly will need a victory against Dawson to advance to the playoffs.

Region 8

Team Reg. Overall

No. 3 Monroe Area -- 3-0, 8-0

No. 9 Hart County -- 2-1, 7-1

No. 4 Oconee County -- 2-1, 7-1

Stephens County -- 1-2, 6-2

East Jackson -- 1-2, 3-5

Franklin County -- 0-3, 3-5

Notes: Monroe Area’s victory against Oconee County (17-14) last week was paramount in its attempt to win the region title. The Purple Hurricanes lead the league at 3-0 and will face Franklin County on Friday. Oconee will travel to Stephens County on Friday and then hosts Franklin County on Nov. 5 to close the regular season. The Warriors beat Hart County (2-1 in the region and tied with Oconee) and likely will finish second in the standings.
