There are two new No. 1 teams in girls high school basketball this week as Southwest DeKalb and Holy Innocents’ move into the top spots of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution rankings.
Southwest DeKalb, the defending Class AAAAA champion, and previous No. 1 Tucker swapped positions at Nos. 1 and 2 after Tucker lost to sixth-ranked Forest Park 45-43 on Saturday. Tucker beat Southwest DeKalb 73-64 in their only meeting of the regular season on Dec. 17, but Southwest DeKalb is on a 10-game winning streak and defeated Norcross, a Top 10 AAAAAA team, on Saturday.
In Class A, Holy Innocents’ moved up from No. 2 after St. Francis, the previous No. 1, lost to Southwest Atlanta Christian 54-49 on Friday. St. Francis dropped to No. 3, and Southwest Atlanta Christian moved up to No. 2. Holy Innocents’, which beat Class AA No. 1 Wesleyan 74-57 in December, plays St. Francis at home on Feb. 1.
The other four No. 1 girls teams – McEachern (AAAAAA), Redan (AAAA), Buford (AAA) and Wesleyan – remained the same.
McEachern beat two New York teams in the Rose Classic in Brooklyn over the weekend and faces fourth-ranked Hillgrove at home on Friday.
Redan beat defending champion Columbia for the second time this season, winning 65-50 on Saturday. Buford and Wesleyan both won twice last week and head for a showdown Saturday at Wesleyan.
The top-ranked boys teams remained the same for the second week in a row despite getting a challenge. Wheeler, the top-ranked AAAAAA team, beat No. 8 Walton and No. 9 Milton last week. Miller Grove, No. 1 in AAAAA, beat No. 3 Tucker on Friday night.
Only nine teams remain undefeated after four suffered their first losses last week. North Forsyth’s girls fell to 18-1 on Saturday with a 50-49 loss to St. Francis. Beach’s girls team lost to Tattnall County 57-55 on Friday and is 17-1. Calhoun County’s boys (15-1) lost to Randolph-Clay and fell out of the Class A rankings. Thomson’s boys (11-1) remained No. 10 after losing to No. 2 Washington County in a AAA game.
