The Hawks open the 2013-14 season at the Mavericks on Oct. 30, starting a stretch in which the team plays seven of its first 11 games on the road.

The NBA released its schedule Tuesday, and the Hawks will open the home portion of their schedule Nov. 1 against the Raptors. They then depart for a three-game trip at the Lakers, Kings and Nuggets. In addition to those early road games, the Hawks travel to London in January for a home game against the Nets.

Here’s a breakdown of the schedule:

Reunions

The Hawks will see several former players and coaches on the opposite side of the court this season.

The most notable of the reunions will come Nov. 20 when Josh Smith returns to Atlanta wearing a Pistons uniform after playing his first nine seasons for his hometown Hawks. Two days later, the Hawks will play Smith at his new address. The teams meet four times, including Jan. 29 in Atlanta and Feb. 21 in Auburn Hills, Mich.

The other big reunion will come against the Bucks, who now feature coach Larry Drew and center Zaza Pachulia. Drew spent 10 seasons with the Hawks, including the past three as head coach before the team let him go and hired Mike Budenholzer. Bob Bender and Nick Van Exel also are on Drew’s staff after serving in Atlanta. Pachulia spent eight seasons with the Hawks before leaving via free agency. The Bucks’ first trip to Atlanta is March 13. The Hawks’ final regular-season game is against the Bucks. Wouldn’t it be something if a playoff berth is on the line?

Return to sender

Budenholzer will have a notable reunion of his own when the Hawks play at San Antonio on Dec. 2. The Hawks coach spent 18 seasons in the Spurs organization, including the past 16 as an assistant coach. The Hawks host the Spurs in the exhibition season, but December will be his debut as a head coach in the city where he tutored under Gregg Popovich.

Notable games

In addition to the aforementioned reunions, the home schedule features several key games.

  • The world champion Heat will host the first two of the four-game series against the Hawks. LeBron James and company will play at Philips Arena on Jan. 20 and April 12.
  • Dwight Howard comes to Atlanta as a member of the Rockets on Jan. 10.
  • Chris Paul and the Clippers will be in town Dec. 4.
  • Kobe Bryant, if his Achilles allows, and the Lakers will be in Atlanta on Dec. 16.
  • The new-look Nets, with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, will not come to Philips Arena. The Hawks and Nets play three times, twice in Brooklyn and once in London.

Home schedule

The Hawks’ home slate features 11 Friday games and eight Saturday games.

While the Hawks play often on the road in the early portion of the schedule, they are home for 12 of their final 19 games. The season-long homestand is just four games, coming against the Clippers, Cavaliers, Thunder and Wizards from Dec. 4-13.

Road schedule

The Hawks’ season-long road trip is six games at the Celtics, Suns, Trail Blazers, Warriors, Clippers and Jazz from Feb. 26-March 10.

Back-to back

The Hawks play 20 sets of back-to-back games this season, including five times in November. It is part of a stretch of 10 games in 16 days from Nov. 15-30. There are nine home-road and nine road-home back-to-backs. Twice the Hawks play back-to-back road games.

All-Star break

The Hawks will have a lengthy break in February for the All-Star game. The game will be played Feb. 16 in New Orleans. The Hawks’ final game before the hiatus in Feb. 12, and they don’t return until Feb. 18.

TV exposure

The Hawks have only six games on national television. ESPN will broadcast three games — Nov. 13 vs. Knicks, March 5 vs. Trail Blazers and April 16 vs. Bucks. NBA TV will air three games — Jan. 16 vs. Nets in London, Feb. 22 vs. Knicks and March 15 vs. Nuggets. ABC and TNT are not scheduled to carry a Hawks game.
