Brad Guzan’s move to Atlanta United may be on hold, according to mlssoccer.com’s Sam Stesjkal.

Citing multiple people with knowledge who wished to remain anonymous, Middlesbrough, the team that Guzan plays for in England’s Premier League, want Atlanta United to pay a transfer fee, rather than simply releasing him from his contract.

Paying that transfer fee would make it impossible for Atlanta United to avoid signing Guzan as a Designated Player. The move was supposed to be completed during he January transfer window.

Guzan has 53 appearances as a goalkeeper for the U.S. men’s national team. After being a regular starter for Chivas USA in MLS, he signed with Aston Villa in the Premier League. He played there from 2008 until signing with Middlesbrough before the 2016-17 season. He has just five appearances this season with the club.

Atlanta United has two goalkeepers on its roster: Alex Tambakis and Alec Kann.

The team has two selections in Friday’s SuperDraft.

If the Guzan deal falls through, it would be the second high-profile transfer reportedly completed to fall through for Atlanta United. The team reportedly had a deal for Oscar Romero, only to see a Chinese club sign him.
