Georgia State center fielder Josh Merrigan and pitcher-infielder Matt Rose have been selected by Collegiate Baseball to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team.
Merrigan, a center fielder from Walton High School in Marietta, had the most productive freshman season in Panthers history with a .353 batting average, 84 hits, 52 runs scored and 36 RBIs. He had 15 doubles, five triples and four home runs and was 12-for-12 in stolen bases.
Merrigan was chosen Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year – the first for the GSU program – and was selected to the All-CAA second team and the CAA All-Rookie team.
Rose, a right-handed pitcher from Palm Bay High School in Melbourne, Fla., who also played first base and third base, was selected as a multi-position player. He was 3-2 with five saves and a 2.55 earned run average, striking out 30 in 35.1 innings. He hit .283 with four home runs and 32 RBIs in 45 games. Rose was chosen to the CAA All-Rookie team.
“Both of these young men worked very hard and are most deserving of this recognition,” GSU coach Greg Frady said.
