Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez played in a record-tying 14th Pro Bowl in Honolulu on Sunday.

Gonzalez tied defensive lineman Merlin Olsen and offensive lineman Bruce Matthews for most appearances in the NFL’s All-Star game. He was a late addition as the first alternate when San Francisco’s Vernon Davis couldn’t play.

“I thought it was over for me, but when I got that call and they said come over to Hawaii and hang out with some of the best guys in the business, to me it was kind of a no-brainer,” Gonzalez said during NBC’s preview of the game. “What a great way to cap off the career and spend some time with the beautiful people of Hawaii and hopefully go out a winner.”

Gonzalez was emphatic that he would remain retired after 17 years in the league, the last five with the Falcons.

“At this point, I am totally at peace with my decision,” Gonzalez said. “I’m looking forward to it, seeing the next chapter in life. I’m excited about it.”
