Cameron “Oh Very” Young is a 17-year-old high school senior-to-be from New York on his way to Friday’s quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur.
And after surviving two rounds of match play Thursday — beating Isaiah Logue 2 up and Kyle Jones 1 up — he sounded like he got about a dozen years older overnight. Those college kids don’t worry him.
“Where I grew up, there’s been a lot of really good college players right around where I live, so I’ve grown up the last few years playing against people that were a little older than me,” he said.
“I’ve always put myself right with them and just kind of tried to be the same age I guess, one of them.”
The youngest of the eight players left in the field, Young did not sound like he was going to concede anything. He feels so much more comfortable than last year, he said, when he was just 16, playing in his first Amateur.
“Definitely,” he said. “Just being a year older and knowing my own game a little better. I’m feeling more and more like I belong here and like I can play with anybody here.”
