Follow the leader

After  one round, Jordan Spieth was leading the field of  89 at 6-under 66. He is the first defending champion to lead after the first day since Jack Nicklaus opened with a 68 in 1966.

Staying in the lead

Speith has only played nine rounds at Augusta National. He has led for six of those rounds. In the last 30 years only Tiger Woods has led for more consecutive rounds (9). Fred Couples and Phli Mickelson have also led for six consecutive rounds.

Best shot of the day

Spieth hit a 4-iron through a tiny gap in the trees right of the 11th fairway to the left edge of the green and made par.

The stat sheet

Spieth had his fifth straight round in the lead at the Masters. Arnold Palmer was atop the leaderboard for six straight rounds in 1960-61.

Round and round he goes

Spieth has never shot worse than par at the Masters and is 29 under for his first nine rounds. Tiger Woods was 21 under in his first nine rounds as a pro.
