A closer look at four newsmakers from Day 3 of the 80th Masters at Augusta National Golf Club:

JORDAN SPIETH

73-213, 1st

Highlight: He rebounded from a bogey at No. 7 with a birdie on No. 8 and from a double-bogey at No. 11 with a strong birdie putt at No. 12.

Lowlight: He short-sided himself at No. 11 on the second shot, and it led to a chip and three-putt bogey. And then he wasted a four-shot lead by making bogey at No. 17 and double-bogeying the final hole.

He said it: "Understand this is the position I wanted to be in after 54 holes and not think about the finish to today's round."

RORY McILROY

77-218, T11

Highlight: There were so few. No birdies made the card, and he missed a great chance at No. 18. The best thing? He's still only five shots back.

Lowlight: Nos. 10 and 11, the thorns in his Masters appearances, bit him again; he made bogey at 10 and hit into the water at 11 on a layup and made double bogey.

He said it: "I'm feeling a little better standing here five behind than I was on the 17th tee. So I have to take some heart from that and regroup and come back and be positive tomorrow."

SMYLIE KAUFMAN

69-214, 2nd

Highlight: Birdies on 13, 14 and 16 put the Alabama native who played at LSU in prime chase position.

Lowlight: His only blemishes were bogeys on Nos. 8 and 11.

He said it: "My birdie putts were good today. I had a lot of tap-in pars, easy pars. Most of the holes it was pretty stress-free. It was really nice just to keep going and not having to build up my, I guess, patience level where I was going to get upset about things."

BERNHARD LANGER

70-215, T3

Highlight: Birdies on Nos. 2, 5 and 8 got him to 35 on the front, and birdies at Nos. 13-15 pushed him up the leaderboard.

Lowlight: A struggling bogey at No. 18 after a drive in the right pine straw knocked him out of a tie for second.

He said it: "I've been playing very good golf the last three days. Hit the ball very well yesterday. Just didn't make any putts, and today … made a couple of putts and just played smart, aggressive smart, if you can be aggressive hitting hybrids into these greens."
