ORIGINAL: AUGUSTA – They began the third round of the Masters on Saturday and a Flomax commercial broke out.
Before getting to the serious business of jockeying for final round position – that’s why they call golf Saturdays “moving day” – we might recognize an achievement in graceful aging. Six of the 51 players who made the cut were over the age of 50.
Hooray for bran. Hooray for the fitness trailer.
One of them – 54-year-old Fred Couples is even viable, at 2 under. The others are Larry Mize (55), Bernhard Langer (56), Sandy Lyle (56), Miguel Angel Jimenez (50) and Vijay Singh (51). All but Singh are scheduled to appear next weekend at Champions Tour event at TPC Sugarloaf, the Greater Gwinnett Championship.
All of them can savor the satisfaction of teeing off after the young star Rory McIlroy, who barely limboed under the cut line and went off first Saturday morning paired with a non-competing marker.
Leader Bubba Watson departs the first tee Saturday afternoon at 2:45 p.m.
