Kevin Chappell hung around all day to get in a three-way playoff at the Tour Championship.
He quickly bowed out.
Chappell was eliminated on the first extra hole – the par-5 18th – as Rory McIlroy and Ryan Moore played on. And on. And on. McIlroy won the tournament and FedEx Cup title with a birdie on the 16th hole – the fourth playoff hole.
Chappell started in the final pairing of the day along with Dustin Johnson at East Lake Golf Club. He managed a final-round 4-under par 66 to finish in the threesome at 12-under par as both McIlroy and Moore made up their two-stroke deficit. Johnson fell out of contention with a 3-over par 73.
On the first playoff hole, Chappell hit his tee shot in the primary rough and was unable to reach the green in two. He two-putted from 20 feet and finished with a par. McIlroy and Moore marched on with birdies.
“It wasn’t too much pressure,” Chappell said. “I was kind of in that situation all day. I hit a bad tee shot and it was out of position. I wasn’t able to get the ball back in position to make birdie.”
