Wednesday at the Amateur will begin with the running of the last hopefuls — a 17-way sudden death playoff for the final four spots in the 64-man match play field. They will hash that out at 8 a.m. Wednesday, with match play scheduled to begin at 9 a.m…Will Thomson likely has more U.S. Amateurs in his future. And, with a little growing, he’ll likely get a lot more competitive. Thomson, 13, the youngest-ever to play in the Amateur, departed Tuesday 12 over after two days of play and finished ahead of seven others in the 312-player field…The Highlands Course at the Atlanta Athletic Club gets all the big events (and it will be the venue for the Amateur match play from here through the weekend). But its lesser famous brother, the Riverside Course, held up well over two days of sharing stroke play. Highlands played just a tic more difficult (the field averaging 3.714 strokes over par) than Riverside (3.022).
