After Thursday’s round, Luke Schniederjans hoped he would make the cut and get the chance to play another two rounds in The Dogwood Invitational.
Schniederjans, a rising senior at Harrison High School who committed to Georgia Tech, made the cut. But it turns out he’ll play more one round at Druid Hills Golf Club after Friday’s round was rained out, and the tournament was shortened to a 54-hole event. The final round is still scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
The entire field hadn’t start play Friday when an early-morning thunderstorm arrived, and the radar indicated more rain would follow, tournament chairman Edward Toledano said. Those two facts led to the cancellation of Friday’s round.
There was rain Thursday afternoon, but most, if not all, of the golfers had finished their rounds or were on the course when the storm hit.
Play will resume at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and the leaders will tee off around 2:30. Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb University leads the field with an 11-under 133, and Brad Dalke, an Oklahoma signee, is one stroke behind.
Dalke gained notoriety this spring when he beat Rory Mcllroy in arm-wrestling.
The highest-ranked players with Georgia connections are Kyle Mueller, Zach Healy and Zack Jaworski, all tied for sixth. Healy is the sole player in that trio who attends a college in Georgia — the University of Georgia. The other two attended Georgia high schools.
Schniederjans, whose older brother, Ollie, is a former All-American golfer at Tech, is tied for 37th at 2-under 142. Schniederjans survived by the skin of his teeth. The cut was set at 2 under, and 43 golfers out of a field of 93 made the cut.
