For the first time in his career, Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for over 100 yards in consecutive games.
Gibbs is the team’s leading rusher this season, with 524 yards on 101 carries.
In Saturday’s 26-17 loss to Virginia Tech, Gibbs finished the game with 11 rushes for 113 yards.
Tech offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude believes that Gibbs’ success running is because of more reps and ability to have a better sense of the game.
“Jahmyr has a good feel for the run game now,” Patenaude said. “He’s much more understanding of defenses and how they’re fitting things. In the past he would have ran to the edge and outrun people because he’s a special athlete. Now, he’s understanding that if I bounce it out, there is nobody out to block.”
Patenaude also gave credit to the offensive line for Gibbs’ success.
“When he gets on the second level, he’s tough to bring down,” Patenaude said. “In the past, where he might have just tried to run one to the edge and outrun people because he’s a special athlete, now he’s understanding that, ‘If I bounce the ball out there, there’s nobody being blocked. I’m on my own.’”
Gibbs’ ranks 10th in the ACC in rushing yards.
