With the start of the early signing period a week away, Georgia Tech football coach Brent Key is trying to add to his signing class, which as of Wednesday morning stood at 13 commits. No fewer than eight high school seniors had announced offers going back to last Thursday as Tech coaches have been busy making visits to high schools and recruits’ homes. Tech has lost four commitments since Dec. 2.

Alexander High receiver Eric Singleton was the latest high school prospect to announce an offer, going to Twitter on Tuesday night to share the news. Committed to Western Kentucky, Singleton has received a series of offers from power-conference schools since October.

Another was Ethan Fields, a three-star offensive lineman from Dutchtown High in Geismar, La., who is committed to Purdue and announced his offer from Tech on Sunday. On Monday, he posted a photo on Twitter of a home visit from Key, new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, new offensive line coach Geep Wade and quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke, a significant demonstration of Tech’s interest.

Fields is a candidate to be lured away given that Purdue is going through its own coaching transition, having lost Jeff Brohm to Louisville and hiring Illinois defensive coordinator Ryan Walters on Tuesday as his replacement.

Tech has also made a bid for another prospect from Louisiana, four-star edge rusher Ashley Williams from Zachary High. Williams withdrew his commitment from Auburn last week in the wake of the program’s coaching transition.

It portends a busy close to the start of the early signing period, as did a tweet from Kenyatta Watson, the team’s director of scouting and pro liaison. In a post Wednesday morning, Watson wrote “Watch how we close,” adding three bumblebee emojis for emphasis.
