Georgia Tech’s 45-22 win over no. 21 ranked North Carolina marked a big win for the Yellow Jackets and coach Geoff Collins.

This is the Yellow Jackets first win against a ranked opponent in the Collins era and can lead to bigger things. Those bigger things include battling for the ACC Coastal division crown.

Although it is a major win, it is one that was long overdue.

The week before, the Yellow Jackets traveled to Death Valley and nearly upset the no. 6 ranked Clemson Tigers. While they came up short, losing 14-8, many lessons were learned from that game.

Not only was it an emphasis on finishing the game and capitalizing on opportunities, but it was also about the working on the small details for Collins.

“The Clemson game, it finally clicked. And they did it,” Collins said about his team being able to pull the upset win against North Carolina. “They played one play at a time, one series at a time and they did it again against UNC.”

Collins stated that he felt his team sometimes made the moment bigger than what it was. In games like this past Saturday, Collins wants his team to learn and build upon the fundamentals.

“They didn’t make the game bigger than it needed to be,” said Collins. “Focus on your assignment, focus on your technique. It’s a principle we have been trying to embark on for two years (and) it finally clicked. We try to make it as small and focused as possible”

The Yellow Jackets will try to build momentum as they host Pittsburgh Saturday.
