Willie Fritz will be the new football coach at Georgia Southern, according to reports.
Fritz, who has been the coach at Sam Houston State the past four years, will replace Jeff Monken, according to WJCL in Savannah and FootballScoop.com. The Savannah Morning News also reported the hire, citing “several sources close to the Eagles football program.”
Fritz was 40-15 in four seasons at Sam Houston State, a FCS program in Huntsville, Texas, near Houston. He led the Bearkats to consecutive FCS title games in 2011 and 2012, losing both to North Dakota State.
The Bearkats were 9-5 in 2013.
Fritz will turn 54 years old in April.
Here’s what Fritz told the Huntsville Item on Tuesday: “All I can tell you is that I’m really happy at Sam. I really like who I’m working for and with. There’s always times when people are talking to you. The thing I’m fortunate with is that I’ve got a great job where I am.”
Georgia Southern is moving from the FCS to the FBS, where it will join the Sun Belt Conference for the 2014 season. The Eagles won six FCS national titles.
Fritz was believed to be one of four finalists for the job, which has been open since Monken left for Army just before Christmas.
The others: Navy offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper, Wofford coach Mike Ayers and Auburn running backs coach Tim Horton.
Fritz also has been the coach at Central Missouri, where he was 97-47, and Blinn College.
