ATHENS — Jaiden Fields made a name for herself Tuesday night.

Well known as quarterback Justin Fields’ younger sister, she’s also a very good softball player for Georgia. Her skills at the plate were on display at Jack Turner Stadium as Fields’ two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the No. 22 Bulldogs to a 7-6 win over No. 1 Oklahoma.

Georgia’s victory was the first loss of the year for Oklahoma (33-1) and snapped the Sooners’ 40-game winning streak. It was also the Bulldogs’ first win over a No. 1-ranked team since Georgia (28-12) defeated Florida in the 2016 NCAA Super Regional in Gainesville.

Fields’ game-winning hit atoned for her mistake earlier in the game. She hit what appeared to be a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. But umpires determined that she failed to step on home plate during the celebration with her teammates.

Fields instead was called out, her run was taken off the board and she was scored with a triple instead. Had the homer stood up, Georgia would have won the game in a regulation seven innings.

But Sydney Kuma and Sara Mosely each drove in runs in the seventh for the Bulldogs to come back from a 6-4 deficit and send the game into extra innings.

It was a team effort as Georgia rapped out 11 hits against the Sooners. Fields led the way with a 3-for-5 night and three RBIs.

The excitement of the big upset was tempered later when the Oklahoma run-ruled the Bulldogs in a 12-3 win in five innings. It was the Sooners’ 26th victory by run rule this season.

A sophomore from Kennesaw, Jaiden Fields came to Georgia a year after her brother, Justin, enrolled as the No. 1-ranked quarterback recruit in the country. She is third on the team with a .304 average and now has five home runs and one triple on the season.

Justin Fields transferred to Ohio State before the 2019 season and starred for the Buckeyes the last two seasons.

Jaiden and the Bulldogs are off through April 29. So she has a chance to be with her family as Justin gets an expected first-round call in the NFL draft that night.
