ATHENS – From the moment Georgia’s Major Burns entered the transfer portal, it was suspected he’d be headed back home to attend LSU. That speculation became reality Tuesday as the sophomore defensive back from Baton Rouge announced he had committed to and would sign with the Tigers.

Burns was running second team at safety with the Bulldogs, behind returning starters Lewis Cine and Christopher Smith. An early enrolled freshman last year, Burns played sparingly in his only season. He appeared in six games as a backup and special-teams contributor and finished with five tackles.

Burn was the sixth defensive back to leave the Bulldogs with eligibility remaining and left them with just 10 players in the secondary. However, Georgia has since added West Virginia’s Tykee Smith and Alabama’s Brandon Turnage via transfer and freshman Kamari Lassiter will enroll in June.

Burns was considered a steal from LSU when he signed in UGA’s 2020 class. The 4-star prospect attended Madison Prep Academy just minutes from the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. Burns followed in the footsteps of receiver Makiya Tongue, who also attended high school near LSU’s campus before signing with the Bulldogs in 2019. Tongue has also since transferred, but to Oregon State.

It all was part a concerted push by the Bulldogs to recruit the state of Louisiana. Georgia also had a long-time commitment from 5-star running back John Emery of New Orleans, but Emery ended up switching at the end of the recruiting period and signed with LSU. Georgia has one remaining player on its roster from Louisiana in redshirt freshman defensive back Daran Branch of Amite, La.
