Florida State’s worst fears have become reality.
Quarterback Deondre Francois will miss the remainder of the 2017 season with a patella tendon injury in his left knee which will require surgery, according to the the Tallahassee Democrat.
Francois suffered the injury with 6:25 left in the final quarter of Florida State’s season opener against Alabama on Saturday. The redshirt sophomore was sacked from behind by Crimson Tide defensive back Ronnie Harrison and remained on the ground for several minutes clutching his left knee before he was helped off the field by two trainers.
Francois was 19-for-33 passing on Saturday night with 210 yards, a touchdown and two second-half interceptions. The former ACC Rookie of the year could apply for a medical redshirt, which would give him a sixth year of eligibility.
Head coach Jimbo Fisher said after Saturday’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game that freshman James Blackman would be the Seminoles’ starter.
Aside from Blackman, redshirt junior J.J. Consentino and freshman Bailey Hockman are the only two other scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.
The Seminoles will play their home opener on Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe.
