Georgia Tech might be playing a 12th game after-all this season.
Paul Johnson said during his weekly press conference on Tuesday that he wanted to add another game to make-up the regular-season game against Central Florida that was canceled because of Hurricane Irma.
That game was scheduled to take place on Sept. 16 in Orlando, and originally the Yellow Jackets sought not to find a replacement opponent for that game, leaving them with 11 games on the schedule.
Johnson said he doesn’t want to schedule that 12th game for Dec. 2 (the date of the ACC Championship), which leaves the bye -week date of Oct. 7, as the only possible open date.
With that in mind, here’s a look at some FBS teams that have open dates that weekend. This is hypothetical, but here are four intriguing matchups.
(Keep in mind that these are unlikely given the short timing, caliber of competition, travel and some teams would have to drop another game to not play 13 games.)
1. Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-0)
This would be some sight. Heisman candidate Mason Rudolph and the mullet-man Mike Gundy taking on the Yellow Jackets. The Cowboys are ranked No. 6 in the country, according to the AP poll, thanks in large part to their explosive offensive. Georgia Tech’s opponent this week Pittsburgh got a first-hand look at the Pokes’ powerful offensive last weekend. The Cowboys led 49-14 at halftime, racking up 516 total yards on 46 plays. Rudolph threw for 423 yards and five touchdowns -- a new school record for first-half yards and touchdowns -- on 20-of-28 passing. He had a quarterback rating of 257.3. Just watch this play (below) against Pittsburgh. It should give you some insight into Rudolph’s abilities.
2. UCLA Bruins (2-1)
It’s a long trip to go to Los Angeles, but it might be kind of cool to see Paul Johnson strolling down Hollywood Blvd. The Bruins possess one of the top quarterbacks in the nation in Josh Rosen. Many NFL 2018 mock drafts have Rosen projected to go first or second overall. He is deadly accurate and threw for 453 yards and four touchdowns last Saturday in the Bruins 48-45 loss to the Memphis Tigers. The loss knocked them out of the AP Top 25. If UCLA came to Atlanta, it would be a homecoming for coach Jim Mora, who coached the Atlanta Falcons from 2004-06 and led the Falcons to the NFC Championship Game in 2004.
3. Wyoming Cowboys (1-2)
Now picture KeShun Freeman wearing cowboy boots, riding a horse, on a ranch. Wyoming hasn't started the season off on the best foot, losing two of its first three games by an average of 28.5 points. However, the Cowboys still possess a top-three rated quarterback, according to many NFL scouts. Josh Allen has had a lot of hype surrounding him through the early stages of this year, which he hasn't lived up to yet. The junior has all the intangibles it takes to be an NFL-caliber talent. He is listed at 6-foot-5, 233 pounds and has drawn some comparisons to Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Carson Wentz.
4. South Florida Bulls (3-0)
This might be the most intriguing option of all. The Bulls had their Sept. 16 game against the Connecticut Huskies postponed due to Hurricane Irma. Although that game has been rescheduled to Nov. 4, USF had to cancel another game to make the change. They have only 11 games scheduled, like Tech. New coach Charlie Strong has his Bulls ranked 21st in the AP Top 25. USF possess a dynamic playmaker in quarterback Quinton Flowers. The dark-horse Heisman candidate threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns while adding 106 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries in his last outing against Illinois.
