Blackmon lettered at North Gwinnett High School before attending Young Harris. He transferred to Georgia Tech in 2007 where he transitioned from a first-team all-conference pitcher to a hard-hitting outfielder. He started all 62 games in 2008 with a .396 batting average and 99 hits. In that same year, he was drafted in the second round of the MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies.
