Wes Schweitzer to start at right guard against Steelers

Wes Schweitzer will start at right guard for the Falcons in the exhibition game against the Steelers this weekend, coach Dan Quinn said Friday.

“In this game at guard, we’ll start Wes and last week we started Ben (Garland),” Quinn said. “That was really by design for me heading into training camp. I knew Week 1 I was going to start Ben and Week 2 I wanted to start Wes. ... Don’t read into it past that. … Both are going to play almost the equal amount of plays.”

Garland remains listed with the first team at right guard in the second official depth chart, which was released by the team Monday. Quinn said he pre-determined this start of Schweizter during the offseason.

Garland and Schweitzer have been rotating with the first-team offense through training camp. The Falcons must replace Chris Chester, who retired in the offseason.

Quinn and offensive line coach Chris Morgan said the battle will continue through the four exhibition games. Both Garland and Schweitzer played well in the opener against the Dolphins, but no “clarity” was given about the position, Quinn said.

The Falcons are set to play at the Steelers at 4 p.m. Sunday.

(The team calls it’s depth chart ‘unofficial,” but since they release it, that makes it official.)
