The Falcons needed an interception with under two minutes to play to pull out a 10-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans before 63,329 fans on Sunday at Nissan Stadium.
Backup safety Robenson Therezie intercepted Zach Mettenberger’s pass with 1:31 to preserve the ugly win in a sloppily played game. The Falcons improve to 6-1 with the win and weren’t apologizing for it.
“This game is over and done with, nobody is going to look back at it,” said Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones, who thought he’d wrapped up the win with an apparent fourth-quarter touchdown. “We just came here to get the W. It wasn’t pretty, but it shows that we are going to fight until the end.”
The Titans dropped to 1-5.
Here’s are the five things we learned:
1. Freeman keeps rolling. Running back Devonta Freeman rushed for 116 yards on 25 carries for the Falcons
It was the first time the Falcons have had a 100-yard rusher in three straight games since 2009, when Michael "The Burner" Turner had 151, 166 and 111 in Weeks 8-10 against the Saints, Redskins and Carolina.
“Doing what I do best every day, staying in a rhythm,” Freeman said. “You know, finding little creases and making stuff work.”
Freeman had a 47-yard gain called back because of blocking in the back penalty by wide receiver Roddy White.
“We just used the runs, the stretches, the inside runs and everything just kind of worked and we executed,” said Freeman, who also has two catches for 14 yards.
2. Therezie saves the day. Therezie was benched in favor or Ricardo Allen at free safety. He was in the game late because on an groin injury suffered by William Moore in the second quarter.
With the Titans driving for the potential game-winning touchdown drive, Therezie intercepted a pass intended for Titans wide receiver Kendall Wright.
“He threw it right to me,” Therezie said. “We had that pressure on him, so he had to get it out.”
3. Ryan has sub-par game. Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, on a two-yard pass in the second quarter, became the fifth-fastest quarterback to reach 30,000 yards passing the National Football League.
Ryan, who as drafted in the first-round of the 2008 NFL draft, entered the game with 29,917 yards passing. He completed 22 of 38 passes for 251 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
He eclipsed the mark with a 2-yard pass to Julio Jones with 7:23 left in the second quarter.
Only Dan Marino, Kurt Warner, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers reached 30,000 yards faster than Ryan.
Ryan, 30, is the fourth-youngest quarterback to reach 30,000 yards passing, according to the Falcons.
On the series before reaching the 30,000-yard mark, Ryan’s pass intended for running back Tevin Coleman was tipped and intercepted by Titans linebacker David Bass. He later tossed an interception in the end zone on a pass intended for tight end Jacob Tamme.
4. Offense is funky. Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones was targeted 17 times and finished with nine catches for 92 yards and one touchdown.
“We are in a funk,” Jones said. “We just have to get better. We have to sustain drives. We are a better team than that."
He felt he should have had two touchdowns, but the referees ruled that he didn’t break the plane with 7:38 to go in the game.
Instead of the Falcons going up 17-7, two plays later Ryan was intercepted in the end zone.
“What I heard from the referees over there was, 'hey, I didn’t see the ball.' Did you see the ball?,' " Jones said. "It wasn’t about my foot being in. It was more so about did the ball cross the plane. Clearly, you can see that on the review that the ball crossed the plane. But it goes like that sometimes."
5. Sloppy play. The Falcons officially had six penalties for 53 yards, but two of the players loss much more yards.
Defensive end O’Brien Schofield’s blindside block cost the Falcons’s 84-yard interception return by linebacker Paul Worrilow.
Instead of being out of bounds at the Titan’s 12-yard line and in field goal range with :04 left in the first half, the Falcons had to start at their 6 and just ran out the clock.
Also, wide receiver Roddy White had a block in the back that wiped away a 47-yard gain by Freeman.
