Carolina center Ryan Kalil anchors the offensive line that powers the Panthers’ vaunted rushing attack and protects quarterback Cam Newton.
Kalil, 30, was drafted in the second round of the 2007 draft after a fine career at USC. He’s developed into a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro.
“I’m somebody who firmly believes that no one should define you, but you,” Kalil said. “And coach (Ron) Rivera’s done an incredible job and the front office did an incredible job putting together this football team, and it’s something that’s been in the works for quite some time now.”
The Panthers are built behind a strong rushing attack that features running back Jonathan Stewart, fullback Mike Tolbert and quarterback Cam Newton.
“All of those guys — they’re special runners, and I’ll never complain (about) where they’re gonna run or where they’re gonna go because a lot of times they’ll make me look good, too,” Kalil said. “So, it’s fun blocking for those guys, they’re a special group.”
Kalil credits Panthers defensive tackles Kawann Short and Star Lotulelei with getting him ready for opposing tackles.
“We go pretty hard in practice and … those guys are incredible, and it only makes me better that I get a chance to go up against those guys every day,” Kalil said.
He expects a major battle against the Broncos’ stout defensive front.
“That front is one of the best in the league, and their defensive coordinator (Wade Phillips) is somebody that a lot of coach’s respect,” Kalil said. “Obviously you’ve seen what he’s been able to do with that talent.”
