Falcons coach Dan Quinn appeared more confident about linebacker Brooks Reed making his debut against the Jets on Friday than he did about running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman.
Brooks is coming back from a groin injury. Freeman and Coleman, who are battling for the top running back spot, are coming back from hamstring injuries.
All returned to practice this week, but Reed has taken on a heavier load at practice. Both running backs were still fairly limited.
“It’s awesome having them back in, but as far as the readiness for them, I still want to see what’s the soreness level as we get closer to it,” said Quinn on Wednesday. “One day, you’re a little sore. How are you doing after two day, after three, after four. …I really want to go through the next two days and that’s part of the plan.”
Coleman suffered his injury Aug. 5 and Freeman the next day. They were projected to miss two to four weeks.
Quinn didn’t sound like he was ready to rush them back into the action.
“Are they ready for the work load?,” Quinn said. “Are they ready with the strength of it? If they are, then we’ll make them available. If they are not, then we’ll make the right decision for them.”
He noted that both players wanted to play.
Terron Ward, an undrafted running back from Oregon State, has stepped up with both of the backs out. Also, Antone Smith suffered a hamstring injury against Tennessee and will not be available. The Falcons have signed Michael Ford and Evan Royster while battling the rash of injuries in the backfield.
“Ward has been somebody at the running back spot that has helped us,” Quinn said.
Reed expects to play and Quinn was more optimistic about his plight.
“Yes, as long as there are no setbacks before,” Quinn said. “We’re hoping that he can go, he’s kind of in the same boat with Tevin and Devonta.”
Reed said he hasn’t had any setbacks yet.
“It’s feeling a lot better,” Reed said. “Hopefully, I’ll get some reps and finally get a little game-time experience. It’s been a little while. I’m just trying to rub the rust off right now and trying to catch up to everyone as far as the game speed.”
