The Falcons are expecting Saints quarterback Drew Brees to target cornerback Robert McClain, who’s starting in place of the injured Robert Alford.

“Robert has good confidence to play the game,” Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan said. “He’s got his work cut out for him because Drew Brees is an outstanding quarterback and he’ll throw to wherever he thinks there’s a matchup.”

Brees tried to attack McClain in the season opener when he was playing nickel back. McClain made him pay with a key interception in the endzone.

“Robert is going to have to hold his own at time,” Nolan said. “Robert had good confidence on the outside. I think he has more confidence outside than he does inside. At least he plays the position a little bit better. McClain has stepped in, but he’s got a big task this week.”

McClain is bracing for the challenge.

“You still have to go out there with the mentality to win as many downs as we can,” McClain said. “We have to win more downs than them and create as many turnovers as we can against Brees.”
