Dwight Lowery, who was scheduled to be the Falcons starting free safety, suffered a head injury during the team scrimmage Friday night. He is in the NFL-mandated concussion protocol.
“He will start the process,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “We don’t think it’s very serious.”
Lowery has had three previous concussions in his career, including one last season.
The Falcons are also without safety Dezmen Southward with a leg injury.
“Because he is new to the system, he has become more comfortable and confident in the system,” Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan said of Lowery Saturday. “He is gradually matured that way for us in a short time. … It shows because he is in the right place more often than not and he’s been making some plays. He is a very athletic guy. He has some size. I like his progress. It’s unfortunate that he got banged up last night. Hopefully, he’ll be OK.”
The Falcons signed Lowery in April. He is entering his seventh season after playing three seasons each with the Jets and Jaguars.
Linebacker Pat Angerer remains in the concussion protocol and did not practice Saturday.
