Falcons veteran safety Charles Godfrey, who’s been used on special teams since being signed on Oct. 28, hopes this trip to Green Bay turns out much better than his last one.

While with the Carolina Panthers, Godfrey faced the Packers on Oct. 19. He had a rough day defending Green Bay’s Randall Cobb in the slot. Cobb finished with six catches for 121 yards and one touchdown.

Godfrey was moved to nickel after the Panthers signed former Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud and he had to take a pay cut.

Two days after the poor showing in Green Bay, the Panthers released Godfrey and signed guard Chris Scott. With second-year safety Kemal Ishmael shaky on deep passes and William Moore on temporary injured reserve, the Falcons signed Godfrey as an insurance policy.

Godfrey, 28, who joined the Panthers as a third-round draft pick in 2008 and played in 82 games with 75 starts, had worked his way back from a torn Achilles tendon in 2013. He played in seven games and made one start for the Panthers.

With the Falcons, Godfrey has played in four games on specials teams. He played five snaps against the Cardinals last week, seven against Cleveland, nine against Carolina and one against Tampa Bay.

In addition to having some insights on a division foe, Godfrey can share his thoughts on what worked for Green Bay in that 38-17 victory over the Panthers.
