Falcons still interested in signing Dwight Freeney
The Falcons are still interested in signing sackmaster Dwight Freeney.
The team needs to improve its pass rush, and Freeney, who’s 36, wants to continue playing.
The Falcons have 87 players on their roster, three under the 90-player offseason limit. The Falcons met with Freeney over the offseason.
Of course, Freeney comes with a high recommendation from Sean Weatherspoon. Both played with Arizona last season.
“He’s great,” Weatherspoon said over the offseason. “He’s about the team. He’s helpful. One of my rookies in Arizona was Marcus Golden, and he came and snatched him up and put him right under his wings and taught him some things. He just worked with all of (the) young guys.”
Freeney, who has 119.5 career sacks over his Hall of Fame career, helped the Cardinals reach the NFC Championship game last season.
The Falcons ranked last in the NFL in sacks last season, with 19. Freeney could fill a designated pass-rusher role with the Falcons if signed.
Freeney hasn’t displayed signs of major slippage.
“He still has it,” Weatherspoon said.
