The Falcons have elected not to place linebacker Brooks Reed on the short-term injured reserve list, coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Monday.

Reed was told that he would placed on short-time injured reserve, according to his agent. But that information didn’t’ come from one of the team’s decision-makers, they insisted.

Reed will not play in the opener against Philadelphia as he recuperates. However, team was not ready to share a timetable for his return.

Reed had surgery to repair his groin that was bothering him all offseason. When he’s placed on the short-term list, that will open up another roster spot for the Falcons, which reached the 53-man limit after being awarded tackle Bryce Harris off waivers.

Kroy Biermann is listed behind Reed on the team’s depth chart. Last season’s starter at strongside linebacker Joplo Bartu is also on the roster.

Reed played sparingly in exhibition games against the Jets and Dolphins, after injuring the groin on Aug. 3. Reed, the team’s biggest free agency pickup, sat out most of the offseason program with a groin injury.

Reed played four seasons with the Houston Texans. He was signed to a five-year, $22 million, with $9 million guaranteed.

The injury was originally announced as a hip strain, but Reed said it was a groin injury. He also said the groin injury suffered on Aug. 3 was unrelated to the groin injury he suffered over the offseason.
