FLOWERY BRANCH — The Falcons waived offensive tackle Lamar Holmes off the the reserve/physically unable to perform list after reaching an injury settlement.
Holmes, a third round pick out of Southern Mississippi in 2012, has been dogged by foot injuries over his NFL career. He was waived on Saturday
Holmes was the last member of the 2012 draft class on the team. They Falcons had previously parted ways with center Peter Konz (second round), fullback Bradie Ewing (fifth round), defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi (fifth round), safety Charles Mitchell (sixth round) and defensive tackle Travian Robertson (seventh round).
Holmes, who suffered a broken right foot in June, was placed on the physically unable to perform list by the Falcons on July, 30th.
Holmes, 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds, was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the third-round (91st pick overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Holmes has played in 21 games and made 19 starts for the Falcons.
Holmes, who was tipping the scales at 335 pounds last season, slimmed down to 310 pounds by minicamp over the offseason.
Holmes worked at left and right tackle in the new offensive scheme, before re-injuring his foot.
He reported for camp on crutches and with his foot in a heavy boot. He missed most of last season with a foot injury.
Holmes has a history of foot problems dating back to his rookie season. He played in one game in 2012 and had a foot surgery.
He came back to start 15 of 16 games in 2013 before he suffered another foot injury in the fourth game of last season.
Holmes, 25, had dropped about 30 pounds and was moving well in the Falcons’ new zone-clocking scheme. He was having a strong camp before the injury.
Holmes received the message in his “point of attack” tape from the coaching staff that he needed to lose some weight in order to better fit the new outside-zone blocking scheme.
“He took that message seriously in the offseason,” Quinn said over the offseason. “One of things for him to get better in this system was to get lighter. I couldn’t be more pleased with where he’s at. He had a good first day.”
Holmes may had another set-back or the team has just elected to move in another direction and are happy with the play and depth at the position.
