Falcons coach Mike Smith was not pleased with the defense allowing so may long-gainers against the Chicago Bears.

He noted that there were eight explosive plays for 231 yards. The defense gave up five pass plays that totaled 197 yards and three running plays that accounted for 39 yards.

“We can not continue to give up explosive plays on the defensive side of the football,” Smith said. “We had some miscommunications. We have to do a better job coaching. Our players have to do a better job executing.”

The mis-communications led to receivers streaming down the field wide open.

“We’d like for it to always have our guys on the same page,” Smith said. “When they are not on the same page, it’s usually going to lead to something bad.”

He didn’t want to single out which player had the blow coverage on the 74-yard pass play, although Desmond Trufant and Kemal Ishmael were the two players closest to the ball.

“I don’t want to talk about specific plays, nor will I talk about specific players,” Smith said. “What you see on tape, unless you know what the play call is, you have no idea what is supposed to happen.”
